1. Install a digital programmable thermostat. It puts a boiler on an automatic schedule: full heat during hours when the home is active, and reduced heat when the house is empty or the family is asleep. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says that reducing a home's temperature by 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours a day can reduce total heating costs by 5 to 15 percent.
2. Consider replacing your boiler with a high-efficiency Energy Star® qualified model. This one investment could reduce fuel consumption by 30% or more.
3. Get a boiler tune-up. It will ensure you get maximum performance from the fuel you buy.
